so what is byler anyway?
i'm GLAD YOU ASKED!!!!!!!!! byler/miwi/cleradin/wiseheart is the ship between will byers and mike wheeler from stranger things. yes i know the majority of people dislike stranger things for being mainstream or because the fans are annoying or whatever, i am aware, i personally think it's a good show for the most part. no i don't really care for eddie or steve. whatever okay back to byler.
byler is an incredibly popular ship for reasons that i hope this shrine will make clear. so, will is who i would consider to be one of the three main characters, and he's overall my favorite. he goes through a lot of horrible things in this show, the main ones being that he literally spends a week in a hellish dimension and that he gets possessed by a massive shadow monster. he also has an abusive father who, thank god, is not around in his life anymore, however he's also constantly bullied at school and there's an implication that even the adults in the town talk badly about him. he is very specifically bullied for being gay, so much so that when he goes missing, many people believe that it was a hate crime. as the seasons go on, it becomes very clear that yes, he is actually gay, and in love with one of his best friends. i LOVE will, he's an extremely tragic character who perserveres and survives anyway, and even when he himself is suffering he worries about others. he is disliked by a lot of the general audience for being a 'crybaby', 'weak', and other things of that nature, but he really isn't any of those things. he's honestly strangely overlooked for someone who has so many things happen to him throughout the story, and he deserves the world.
mike, on the other hand, is who i would consider to be another one of the three main characters. he's incredibly loyal to his friends, was incredibly dedicated to finding will in season 1, stood by his side throughout his possession, and seems to have a deeper relationship with him, even though it's somewhat stated in one episode that if he had one best friend, it would be lucas. "now, z, isn't mike the one who's dating that girl with the superpowers, el? why would the writers make him break up with her when she's so important? why would he even end up being with a boy if he's only ever been in a relationship with a girl??" okay so bisexual people exist and also! great point but not really. el and mike's relationship is honestly.... not that great? and the show constantly reinforces this. not only are their scenes typically kind of... childish, corny, boring, cringey, annoying, etc etc, generally hard to watch, but i genuinely think that the only way that the story can go is for them to break up.
okay, for the sake of keeping at least some sort of order, i'll separate my reasoning by the seasons that events take place in, and mention other details (interviews, promotional content, etc) at the end. i also think i should say that since we already have will to be confirmed as gay and in love with mike, i'll be focusing more on showing why i think mike is also queer and in love with will.
season one -- proobably the shortest section...
it's no secret that will doesn't get much screentime in season one. however, he's still important to the season, and we can see hints towards byler even here. one of the first scenes in the show is will telling mike the truth about failing his roll in dnd, aka the iconic "it was a seven" scene. this scene establishes a pattern of characters having heart-to-hearts, which are one-on-one scenes where characters will typically be honest with eachother and deepen their relationship. i think it's nice that the first one of these is between these two, who do very clearly have a deep bond.
i've already mentioned the homophobic bullying directed towards will, but i think it's worth mentioning that this bullying is also directed towards mike, strangely enough? like, the bullies will go up to the group, and will directly speak to mike as they make fun of will for being a 'fairy' or whatever bullshit. the camera also mostly focuses on mike's reaction to them saying these things, and all of this i feel implies that mike has a bigger reaction or is more impacted by these words than the rest of the group. he's also the one who pushes one of the bullies for making fun of will. which, is not an inherently romantic act, but it does show that mike is the most protective out of the group, as the others don't really do anything like this.
another thing that i think is worth mentioning is that mike doesn't really seem to have romantic feelings towards el until people kind of... convince him that he likes her? which feels like, kind of compulsory heterosexuality to me, like, society is pushing these norms and expectations on him to be in a relationship with this girl just because he was kind to her. mike generally reeks of comphet and internalized homophobia to me, particularly in later seasons. it's also entirely possible that i'm wrong here and he did actually have feelings for el, but i honestly don't think he did.
mike is also the character, at least out of the party, who seems most dedicated to finding will, and takes it a lot more seriously, compared to dustin and lucas who are initially arguing when being interviewed by the cops while mike is very serious.
season two
often considered one of the most bylery seasons, will has a far more central role in season two, so we get to directly see mike and will's friendship here.
in this season, will is back, but he's still suffering from the aftermath of being stuck in the upside down for a week. mike is quick to realize that will isn't feeling that great, telling the rest of the group once will has been picked up from school that he was quiet that day. the others remark that he's always quiet. this shows that mike has a better understanding of will than the others.
will also confides in mike specifically, being more truthful and open with him than he is with pretty much everyone else. mike is pretty much by his side the whole season. mike tells him "if we're both going crazy, we'll go crazy together, right?" to which will says yes. which. okay. not inherently romantic but idk its kind of crazy to me that the scene consists of will freaking out because he's having a vision of the upside down, calling for mike, mike runs to him to immediately make sure he's okay, and takes him home to his basement without the rest of the group, to sit there and just eat candy together and talk? and then says something about going crazy together? i'm not crazy for thinking that this could kind of be seen in a romantic way, right? considering that nobody else is doing these things for will, just mike? he is repeatedly so so so dedicated to keeping will safe, which he doesn't really do for the rest of his friends, and the rest of the party doesn't do for will either. they obviously all care deeply for eachother but mike and will are on another level.
there's another similar scene in which will is scared about what's going on, and mike is the one that comforts him, putting his hand over his. these two scenes are often confused for being one scene lol
for the latter half of the season, in which will is possessed and in the laboratory, mike is just.... also there? while the rest of the party is elsewhere? like will's mom and brother are there, and the chief of police, which all makes sense considering that the former are his family while the latter is the one who saved him, and later will possibly be his step-dad as he gets into a relationship with his mom. and then mike is just there. this random 12 year old boy. what??
when they're doing their diy exorcism on will, mike is also one of the people who talks to him to try and snap him out of it. its a genuinely really beautiful scene and another iconic moment, and very emotional for mike as well, as he starts crying. he recounts how will was his first friend, how he was so scared on the first day of school until they met eachother. and i might be wrong but i'm pretty sure that this is what prompts will to slightly break out of his possession.
season three -- dear god what have you done
season three is. certainly an experience. i go back and forth on it all the time. anyway this is when mike starts dating el and becomes sort of insufferable BUT!!!!! THIS ACTUALLY REFUTES BYLER!! so basically mike keeps ditching the rest of the party to literally just go and make out with el but that's. that's it. they don't have any like. actually romantic scenes? it's lit. always just them making out. which to me says that their relationship is shallow, childish,, and that maybe. they don't actually love eachother? since mike is ditching the party, that includes will. will is not happy about this at all. he just wants to spend time with his friends, having a normal life, after literally being put through hell for the past two seasons. but his friends seem to have moved on and they all just have girlfriends now. laaaaaaame. i will say that right at the beginning there's this cute scene where they're kind of on.. a double date (lumax, a canon couple, and then byler is just there....?)?? at the movies, where mike does seem to still worry about will.
there's another big infamous scene in this season which a lot of people use as evidence against byler when it is so clearly the opposite. basically, will, mike, and lucas are all in mike's house, mike and lucas being upset because their girlfriends dumped them, while will is just trying to play dnd with them. mike and lucas keep being really annoying and so will has a reasonable crashout and storms out. mike follows him and they get into an argument in a genuinely beautiful but insanely shot scene, the "rain scene." first of all, having an argument in the rain is crazy, and also.. a romantic trope. second of all, the scene bears great visual similarity to a scene from eyewitness, a show about a gay couple, one of them having internalized homophobia, where they are.. also arguing. about one of them not being gay. third of all, let's get to the actual dialogue.
mike: it's a cool campaign, it's really cool, we're just not in the mood right now!
will: yeah mike, that's the problem, you guys are never in the mood anymore! you're ruining our party!
mike: that's not true!
will: really? where's dustin right now? (silence) see, you don't know and you don't even care, and obviously he doesn't either and i don't blame him! you're destroying everything, and for what? to swap spit with some stupid girl?
mike: el's not stupid, it's not my fault you don't like girls!
(silence)
mike: i'm not trying to be a jerk, okay? but we're not kids anymore.. i mean, what did you think, really? that we were never gonna get girlfriends? that we were just gonna sit in my basement all day and play games for the rest of our lives?
will: yeah, i guess i did. i really did.
i think this speaks for itself but also let me just elaborate on it because this scene is so telling... mike's response here is completely unwarranted as a reply to what will is saying, like it's genuinely so out of nowhere and ridiculous that i feel it can only be explained by the fact that mike is taking out his internal struggles and pushing it out onto others. all those things he's saying, about games and not growing up, those are his wishes too. he looks regretful after will leaves, as if he realizes that maybe he could have had that life, until he ruined it. it also implies that he thinks that he has to get a girlfriend because he's "grown up" (ur 13????????? stfu???????) which brings me again to the compulsory heterosexuality thing. also this argument is treated way more seriously than mike and el's breakup, with mike LITERALLY CHASING WILL IN THE RAIN????? no comment.
there's also a whole thing at the end of this season which drives me insane. so after el and mike are back together and she's moving away with will and will's family, she kisses him and says she loves him, and he just like. stands there. looking scared as she kisses him. clearly not reciprocating it. ???????????????????????????? like he looks kind of disgusted and confused even. insane scene. and this is right after he talks to will and they kind of have a heart-to-heart and mike looks genuinely really happy when will says something about how he won't replace them with a new party. its alsokind of implied that mike is the one who misses will the most and also misses him more than el. ok
season four -- oh we're so back
i won't lie, this is my favorite season. not only is it just a great season overall, but the byler in this is so good....
finishing this later im so tired ive been typing for over an hour atp
